Which Social Networking site works best for you Twitter or Facebook?

In the U.S., people continue to spend more time on social networks, but year-over-year growth for Facebook and Twitter individually outpaced overall growth for the category at large. With the rising craze for social media, every blogger is found actively participating on different social networking platforms. However, with the growing popularity of social media, it is hard to say which network should be tagged as the 800-pound gorilla of the social world.

How different are Twitter and Facebook?
•    Facebook is specifically meant to reconnect with old friends and family members while Twitter does not prove to be friend-meeting destination
•    On Facebook you connect within your specific network while Twitter allows you to update everyone about you
•    Features like email, instant messaging, image and video sharing, etc. are quite simple at Facebook while Twitter is a bit harder to get your arms around initially

Reasons to love Twitter:
•    Simple to navigate and add updates
•    Exposes you to a wider world except few family members and friends
•    Many other applications being developed (Twitterific, Summize, hootsuite, etc.)
•    A pure communication tool and brings in rapid responses
•    Anyone can follow anyone without filling in any formalities
•    Direct Messages from your mobile phone
•    Twitter for stuff within 140 characters
•    Twitter was the fastest-growing social networking site in December 2009, during which it had 18.1 million unique visitors. That’s up from 2.7 million unique visitors in December 2008. Still, month-over-month, unique visitors decreased 5%

Reasons to love Facebook:
•    Facebook is a real treat for the people who are strongly addicted of staying connected with friends or eager to make new acquaintances
•    People are rarely using email or IM tools on another online social communications anymore, relying almost entirely on Facebook for email, chat, image and video sharing
•    You have the option to share your privacy with limited connections and family through private and public profiles
•    Facebook can prove to be a powerful advertising platform
•    Facebook for stuff 141 characters and longer
•    In December 2009, Facebook was the most popular social networking site globally, with 67% of social media fans logging in. In addition, time spent on Facebook has been on the rise; globally, people spend close to six hours per month on the network

Twitter vs. Facebook : Should you choose one?
In the end, I don’t think either Facebook or Twitter can be deemed better than the other,  both Twitter and Facebook are simply communication tools; both will continue to evolve and morph as users find new ways to extract value and either network may or may become a long term winner in the rapidly evolving social networking space. Ultimately, the fact remains to be seen whether either application has a profitable, scalable and sustainable business model or whether the exit strategy is simply to be acquired
